Doug Ward

Doug Ward is associate director of the Center for Teaching Excellence, where he helps set center priorities and develops programs and materials that support faculty and graduate students in improving teaching. His work includes advising instructors on course design, pedagogy, online and hybrid teaching, teaching with technology, generative AI, and approaches to evaluating teaching.

Doug helps lead CTE initiatives including the Benchmarks for Teaching Excellence, the Generative AI in Teaching Working Group, and the Online Teaching Working Group. His work is shaped by a practical interest in helping instructors make teaching more intentional, evidence-informed, and adaptable to changing student needs and technological realities.

Before joining CTE, Doug worked for many years as a photographer and editor, including at The New York Times. He is also an associate professor of journalism and mass communications, where he has developed and taught courses in editing, media innovation, data reporting, media literacy, research, and college teaching. He holds a doctorate from the University of Maryland and has published on teaching evaluation, generative AI in higher education, and the history of market research. Outside of work, Doug walks and hikes, listens to an ambitious number of audiobooks, plays guitar adequately enough, and knows all the dogs in his neighborhood.
