Juneteenth and Pride Month

During the month of June, we recognize the importance of including the experience of communities central to Juneteenth and Pride Month. Find teaching resources below to bring these crucial narratives of freedom and identity into your learning environment.

Uplift Black and LGBTQ+ Voices

  • Include readings or media from Black and queer authors, artists, and scholars in your field.
  • Discuss the work of leaders such as Bayard Rustin, a key organizer of the 1963 March on Washington and an openly gay civil rights advocate.
  • Acknowledge the historical erasure of LGBTQ+ and Black contributions in curricula and professional spaces.

Develop Coursework and Research Centered on Liberation, Identity, and Equity

  • Assign projects that examine the structural roots and contemporary consequences of racial and gender-based oppression—such as mass incarceration, healthcare disparities, or housing segregation.
  • Have students conduct media analyses or archival research on historical and current social movements focused on Black liberation or LGBTQ+ rights.
  • Encourage research or presentations on the intersectionality of race, gender, and sexuality in shaping legal systems, public policy, or community organizing.
  • Facilitate comparative essays or debates on concepts such as freedom, resistance, and visibility across different time periods and movements.

Engage Students in Intersectional Dialogue

  • Lead discussions on how systems of power affect identity and access.
  • Assign reflection papers or creative projects that explore freedom and expression through historical or personal lenses.
  • Encourage students to connect social movements with contemporary struggles for equity and inclusion.
  • Below is a list of events. Encourage students (and colleagues) to participate in these community functions. (Extra credit never hurts!)
