2019 BENCHMARKS PARTICIPANT
The Department of Linguistics will participate in the Benchmarks project in order to create greater uniformity across courses and across faculty members in the quality of the teaching provided to Linguistics students. The rubric will be used to create clear teaching expectations for faculty members prior to the beginning of a semester and provide a consistent mechanism for evaluating teaching performance during the semester.
The department plans to use the rubric to provide a structured and formalized method of feedback, but also to specify goals for faculty members to aim for before the beginning of a course. They feel the process of modifying the rubric to fit the needs of the department will create a forum in which faculty will be able to discuss teaching goals as well as best practices for reaching those goals. Ultimately, they hope that the rubric will aid them in building a system for evaluation that will enhance the teaching effectiveness of the department as a whole, from successful, recognized teachers to less experienced, new faculty.
